The Purple Cap is on him. For the season, he also has an economy rating of 5.95. How do you respond to him?

When Jasprit Bumrah returned to bowl the 11th over of the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) innings, he had already bowled one over and removed Virat Kohli from the game. For two reasons, that opening over hadn’t registered much on the Impact Scale: one, the importance of obtaining Kohli’s wicket early is questionable, and second, the expected score in ESPNcricinfo’s Smart Stats doesn’t shift much with early overs.

Nevertheless, the expected score for RCB was 202 when Bumrah began the eleventh over. After enduring the initial storm, Faf du Plessis and Rajat Patidar were operating at full capacity. Patidar was 36 off 19 and Du Plessis was 39 off 26. Bumrah achieved a four-run eleventh over to raise the expected score to 189. Bumrah began the 17th over with a score of 191, but six balls later, he had reduced it to 181 thanks to the wickets of du Plessis and Mahipal Lomror.

Following 13 and 19-run overs, which gave the RCB hope of reaching an above-par total—a prerequisite at stadiums like Wankhede Stadium, where dew plays a significant part in the second innings—came these two Bumrah overs. only to have that hope dashed by Bumrah. And return and repeat the process.

Bumrah’s ability to dash aspirations has been brilliantly captured by Shiva Jayaraman, who has now dismissed 38 set batters in the IPL, or batters batting on 30 or more. However, since batters are forced to take chances, you are likely to acquire these kinds of wickets if you bowl frequently towards the end of the game. Even by themselves, the wicket total isn’t very high. What’s amazing is that Bumrah has the fifth-best economy rate overall among fast bowlers when setting batsmen in the IPL, and the best economy rate of any bowler since his debut: just 8.01.

Therefore, compared to other fast bowlers, Bumrah gets more set batters out and gives up fewer runs to them. All of it is necessary if you are the Mumbai Indians in the year 2024, as your other bowlers have not yet shown up. Currently wearing the Purple Cap, Bumrah is also bowling at an economy rate of 5.95, 4.22 more economical per over than his team’s second-most economical bowler (among bowlers who have bowled at least 10 overs this season). Mumbai is giving up at least 67 more runs than they would with five Bumrahs in the lineup.

In the end, Dinesh Karthik performed some magic to get RCB to 196, but by the end of the evening, it was evident that they would have required the extra runs that would have come from having one less Bumrah in the opposing attack. When du Plessis was making the post-match presentation, it was clear that he was frustrated with the Bumrah overs.

Du Plessis said of Bumrah, “He has been the difference in the two innings.” When you watch the way the teams bowled, I believe we put a lot of pressure on them as well as on their bowlers. However, because I was there, I can tell you that there is one guy who, despite his versatility, makes it difficult to put pressure on him every time he gets the ball in his hands.

He runs in with the same action, bowls a fast yorker, and then with that exact same action he bowls a slower ball that probably has the biggest variation. Then he has a really good bouncer. He has got so many options. You know you can bring him on and he can get you that wicket, but he can also be defensive [when needed].

Having a plethora of options and knowing when to apply what one has gained via diligent training, planning, and match experience. Bumrah claimed, “This format is very harsh on the bowler.” Therefore, a wide range of talents are required. I train for this very purpose. Because I ought to have more options in this scenario. I shouldn’t just be a one-woman show. I should just learn to rely on other deliveries instead of relying solely on my yorker because there will be days when I execute poorly. Thus, I had also worked on this in the beginning of my career. Everyone is researching the subject. Data and everything related enters. People then begin to queue up. I was therefore thrilled to be able to use it since I wanted to have diverse skills.”

Repetitions in the net are not the only part of the preparation. Bumrah stated, “You have to have bad days to learn from them.” “What I’ve done in the past is watch the videos the following day when I’m feeling calm after a difficult day. What doesn’t function and why didn’t it function? How have I been playing, exactly? You therefore need to stay up to date on all of these things because, in this day and age, you just cannot say, “Okay, I’ll do this, maybe this will work.”

“I always think that being prepared is crucial. You put yourself under pressure in the nets and bowl to hitters who can hit huge sixes when you put in a lot of preparation. You demonstrate your response to pressure and stress by bowling to them. After then, you start looking for solutions. It is imperative that I continue to challenge myself in my training. Then, on game day, you get responses that, well, I had responses throughout training when I experienced comparable pressure.”

Perhaps, but as of right now, we are aware that Suryakumar Yadav hasn’t faced Bumrah in the nets in the previous two to three years. To save his bats and toes, he has really formally asked the Mumbai administration to spare him from facing Bumrah. Suryakumar is doing Bumrah’s opponents a great favour by pushing him even further in the nets. Just think of how much better Bumrah would be.
