The International Cricket Council (ICC) announced that the victors of the 20-team competition in the ninth ICC Men’s T20 World Cup will receive at least 2.45 million USD in prize money, the biggest amount in the game’s history. The tournament winner will receive prize money from the USD 11.25 million purse sanctioned by the ICC, in addition to the trophy they will lift at Kensington Oval in Barbados on June 29. Each participating team gets a minimum of $225,000 USD.
The losing semifinalist receive USD 787,500, while the runners-up will receive at least USD 1.28 million. The teams ranked ninth, tenth, eleventh, and twelveth, respectively, will receive 247,500 USD each, while the four teams who are eliminated from the Super 8s will receive 382,500 USD apiece.
Individuals placing 13th through 20th will receive 225,000 USD in prizes. Every team, save the semifinals and final, gets an extra 31,154 USD for every victory. “Given the historical nature of this event, it makes sense that player prize money would reflect that.” The players will delight hundreds of millions of fans worldwide in what we hope will be an Out of This World spectacle, according to ICC CEO Geoff Allardice.
This will be the largest ICC Men’s T20 World Cup ever, with 20 countries competing in 55 matches spread over 28 days at nine different sites in the USA and the West Indies. For the first round, the 20 teams will be split into four groups of five.
Teams will be divided into two groups of four for the Super 8 stage, with the top two teams from each group advancing. If they qualify, the teams that were ranked first and second in their groups in the first round will continue to be ranked that way in the Super 8. One group will have the finishers from A1, B2, C1, and D2, and the other group will include A2, B1, C2, and D1.
The top two teams from each of the Super 8’s two groups will move on to the semifinals. The final will take place in Barbados on June 29, with the semi-finals taking place in Guyana and Trinidad & Tobago on June 26 and 27, respectively.
