At the T20 World Cup 2024 in Florida, where three Group A matches are scheduled over the next three days, the weather could play a significant role. Much of southern Florida is experiencing an uncommon flash flood emergency due to a tropical disturbance, including Broward County, which includes the matches’ location in Lauderhill.
The venue’s first World Cup match, between Nepal and Sri Lanka, rained out. Three other matches, between the USA and Ireland, Canada and India, and Ireland and Pakistan, could potentially be impacted because the prediction is for persistently high rain.
The whole southern region of Florida is still under a “flood watch” through Friday night, according to the US National Weather Service (NWS). The games are scheduled to begin at 10.30 a.m. local time.
“Heavy to excessive rainfall over southern Florida may continue to bring areas of flash and urban flooding, with locally considerable urban flooding possible, at times into this weekend,” the National Weather Service stated on X.
India’s victory over the USA on Wednesday guaranteed them a position in the Super Eight, but the remaining teams in Group A—USA, Canada, Ireland, and Pakistan—will be vying for the other spot.
Right now, there is still a mathematical chance for all four teams to qualify.
The finalist for the 2022 T20 World Cup Pakistan has only won one of their three games thus far, but if they defeat Ireland and the USA loses against them, they will advance to the next round. The United States, with their two victories, will advance if one of these is eliminated. Ireland (two losses from two) and Canada (one victory from three) are ranked lower on the table.
Group D was also impacted by the washout on June 11, which put Nepal and Sri Lanka in danger of being eliminated.
There are no reserve days for the group-stage matches, and a match must last at least five overs. Reserve days are available for both the first semi-final and the final, but not for the second semi-final because the match and the final are separated by just one day.
