Following an incident with Nepali captain Rohit Paudel during the teams’ June 16 meeting in Kingstown, Bangladeshi fast bowler Tanzim Hasan Sakib was fined 15% of his match fee for violating Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct.

According to an ICC announcement, Tanzim “walked towards Nepal batter Rohit Paudel in an aggressive manner and made inappropriate physical contact” after bowling a ball. The incident happened shortly after the completion of the third over of Nepal’s innings.

Sam Nogajski, the on-field umpire, had to separate the two players after they exchanged a few words and made a lot of hand gestures. Following the incident, umpires were also observed conversing with Bangladeshi captain Najmul Hossain Shanto.

“Inappropriate physical contact with a player, player support personnel, umpire, match referee, or any other person (including a spectator) during an international match” is the subject of Article 2.12 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which Tanzim was found to have violated.

Tanzim also received an additional penalty point added to his disciplinary record. It was his first infraction in a span of 24 months. A player is banned after accruing four or more demerit points in a 24-month period. These points are then converted to suspension points. Depending on which comes first for the player, two suspension points are equivalent to a ban from one Test, two ODIs, or two T20Is.

The decision to penalise Tanzim was made by match referee Richie Richardson, and there was no need for a formal hearing. On-field umpires Ahsan Raza and Nogajski, third umpire Jayaraman Madanagopal, and fourth umpire Kumar Dharmasena all made the accusations.

After the game, Paudel played off the incident. Nothing separates the two of us. All he did was come and tell me to strike. I then said, “Go bowl.” Not a word more,” he stated.

Nepal’s pursuit of 106 was hampered by Tanzim’s spell of 4 for 7, ultimately falling short by 21 runs. At the T20 World Cup, it was the lowest total that any team had successfully defended. At an economy of just 4.80, Tanzim has taken nine wickets in four games, tied for second place in the World Cup. After making it to the World Cup Super Eight, Bangladesh will play Australia on June 21.
