The International Cricket Council (ICC) has scolded Afghanistan captain Rashid Khan for a level 1 infraction of the code of conduct on July 24 during his team’s Super Eight match in Kingstown against Bangladesh.
The event that resulted in Rashid’s punishment happened during Afghanistan’s 20th over of play. Karim Janat, his teammate, sent Rashid back after he hit the ball into the offside zone. Rashid sought the second run to keep the strike. Before he could turn around in mid-pitch, an enraged Rashid flung his bat towards Janat.
Rashid’s disciplinary record now contains one demerit point; this was his first offence in a 24-month span. Level 1 violations are punishable by a reprimand as a minimum, a 50% fine of the player’s match fee as a maximum, and one or two demerit points.
Afghanistan defeated Bangladesh by eight runs using the DLS technique, and Rashid went on to score 19 off 10 balls and take 4 for 23 in the match, securing their first-ever T20 World Cup semi-final spot. On June 26 in Trinidad, they play South Africa to advance to the championship match.
