India defeated South Africa, the first-time finalists, by seven runs in Barbados on Saturday, capping a 17-year wait to win a T20 World Cup.
Indian cricket team supporters had to witness their team come agonisingly close to winning the tournament several times after the team emerged victorious in the tournament’s inaugural edition in 2007. However, the team never managed to secure the victory.
The victory on Saturday was noteworthy not just because it ended the nation’s lengthy wait, but also because the present team was deserving of the title of world champions. They wrote their names into the record books by dominating the competition.
India set the following records during their championship-winning T20 World Cup campaign:
- India became just the third team in history to win the renowned trophy more than once. They shared the historic landmark with the West Indies (2012) and England (2010) and 2022 (2022).
- India’s total of 176, the highest score ever in a T20 World Cup final, was driven by Virat Kohli’s outstanding 76-run contribution in the first innings, which eclipsed Australia’s 173 mark set in the 2021 World Cup finals.
- With his performance in the T20 World Cup, Kohli has solidified his status as the greatest hitter of all time. With this edition’s victory, he became the only player in cricket history to win the Champions Trophy (2013), U-19 World Cup (2008), ODI World Cup (2011), and T20 World Cup (2024).
- Only two players—Shakib Al Hasan of Bangladesh and India’s Rohit Sharma—have participated in all nine tournament editions. He was the first player to capture the trophy after the triumph in both the player and captain roles.
- In addition, Rohit made T20I history as the first captain to win 50 games.
- Jasprit Bumrah, the pace leader for India, made history by being the first bowler to be declared Player of the Tournament at the T20 World Cup thanks to his outstanding bowling performance all round. Throughout the competition, he consistently maintained an incredible economy of 4.17, the lowest in a T20 World Cup edition.
- For his outstanding performance, Kohli was also named Man of the Match. This is no new accomplishment for him; in T20Is, he defeated Suryakumar Yadav to win the most Man of the Match awards (16).
- India also made history by becoming the first team to win the entire tournament without losing. The four unbeaten teams in the tournament—South Africa (2024), Australia (2010), India (2014), and Sri Lanka (2009)—all lost in the championship game.
- With eight games won, the victory broke the record for the most matches won in a single edition.
- In the game’s shortest format, Arshdeep Singh demonstrated his value and the reasons the Indian team supports him. With 17 wickets under his belt, the 25-year-old left-arm bowler tied Afghanistan’s Fazhalhaq Farooqi.
The duo will be sharing the honour of most wickets in a single edition beating the previous record of 16 by Wanindu Hasaranga from Sri Lanka in the 2021 edition.
