Following a historic victory over South Africa in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 final, Indian superstar players Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have announced their retirement from T20 International cricket.
Yesterday marked the 17th time that the Blue squad had claimed the T20 World Cup trophy. “This was my last T20 World Cup, and this is exactly what we wanted to achieve,” remarked Virat Kohli after the game. God is awesome because just when you think you can’t run any more, this happens. Just the right moment—a situation where it’s now or never. My final T20 match as an Indian player was this one. Our goal was to raise that cup.
He went on to say that it is time for the following generation to advance the Twenty20 format.
Following him, Indian team captain Rohit Sharma stated, “This was my last game as well,” during a press conference. There is no better moment to bid this format farewell. I have enjoyed every second of it. My career in India began with me playing this format. I desired to win the cup, and that is what I wanted.”
He went on, “I really wanted this.” really challenging to describe. For me, it was an extremely sentimental time. In my life, I yearned for this title terribly. I’m glad we finally overstepped the mark.
It is important to note that in the 2007 T20 World Cup in Durban, Rohit made his T20I debut against England. He has scored 4231 runs in 159 games for India thus far.
In the meantime, in June 2010, Virat Kohli made his T20I debut. He scored 4188 runs in 125 matches while playing for India in the format.
Notably, India made history yesterday when they won the T20 World Cup title by defeating South Africa by seven runs. While Jasprit Bumrah was crowned the Player of the Tournament, Virat Kohli was chosen the Player of the Match.
