For the three-match ODI series against India in August, Sri Lanka’s selectors have named Charith Asalanka as the team’s new ODI captain, taking Kusal Mendis’ place. Prior to the current series against India, Asalanka was named T20I captain. Wanindu Hasaranga had resigned from the position due to Sri Lanka’s early elimination from the 2024 T20 World Cup.
Though Mendis had also led Sri Lanka in several World Cup matches in an acting role, the same group of selectors had named him the ODI captain in December of last year.
The selectors decided to take a different approach even though Mendis has a fine touch with the bat and Sri Lanka has won six of the eight ODIs that have been played under his management. Sri Lanka had defeated Afghanistan and Zimbabwe at home five times in a row while Mendis was captain, but they fell short of Bangladesh 2-1 away.
August 2, 4, and 7 are the dates for Sri Lanka’s three One-Day Internationals (ODIs) versus India in Colombo. They were behind 2-0 prior to Tuesday’s last encounter in Pallekele, where they lost the current Twenty20 International series.
