Hardik banned for MI’s slow over rate, will miss first game next season

It was the third time this IPL that MI failed to maintain a minimum over rate.

Due to the Mumbai Indians’ sluggish over rate against the Lucknow Super Giants at Wankhede Stadium, captain Hardik Pandya has been suspended for one game. Since MI has already completed their 2024 IPL season, Hardik will not be available for the team’s opening game of the following year.

If Hardik transfers to a different team for the upcoming campaign, he won’t be able to attend the opening game for that team.

This IPL was MI’s third attempt to fall short of a minimum over rate. In addition to the one-match suspension, Hardik was fined INR 30 lakhs, while the Impact Player and the other members of the playing XII were each fined INR 12 lakhs or 50% of their respective match fees, whichever was lower.

For MI as well as Hardik, it was an unmemorable season. MI concluded with just four wins from their 14 games and at the bottom of the points table as a result of their 18-run loss to LSG. Throughout the tournament, the Wankhede crowd jeered Hardik, who replaced Rohit Sharma as captain after being acquired in a pre-season trade. He had a strike rate of 143.04 and an average of 18.00 while scoring 216 runs on the pitch. He claimed 11 wickets at an economy rate of 10.75 with the ball.

The head coach of MI, Mark Boucher, also acknowledged that the noise from off the pitch may have “clouded” Hardik and contributed to the team’s “below-par” performance.
