James Anderson To Retire Following England’s First Test Against West Indies At Lord’s

Veteran fast-bowler James Anderson has declared he would leave the game of cricket after England’s July 10 home summer Test match against the West Indies at Lord’s.

However, rumours surfaced in different parts of the British press on Friday stating that England’s Test coach, Brendon McCullum, had requested that Anderson, who has taken the most wickets in Tests, step down in order to focus on building a team for the future, particularly with the Ashes scheduled for 2025–2026.

“Hi everyone. Just a note to say that the first Test of the summer at Lord’s will be my last Test. It’s been an incredible 20 years representing my country, playing the game I’ve loved since I was a kid.”

“I’m going to miss walking out for England so much. But I know the time is right to step aside and let others realise their dreams just like I got to because there is no greater feeling,” said Anderson in his Instagram post on Saturday.

Anderson made his Test debut against Zimbabwe in 2003, and he went on to score 187 caps for England in that format. The only player with more Test appearances overall than him is the renowned batsman Sachin Tendulkar, who amassed 200 for India. He currently stands in second place.

“I couldn’t have done it without the love and support of Daniella, Lola, Ruby and my parents. A huge thank you to them. Also, thank you to the players and coaches who have made this the best job in the world.”

“I’m excited for the new challenges that lie ahead, as well as filling my days with even more golf. Thank you to everyone who has supported me over the years, it’s always meant a lot, even if my face often doesn’t show it. See you at the Test, go well, Jimmy,” he added.

Anderson also participated in 194 ODIs and 19 T20Is for England, but since 2015, he has focused exclusively on fast bowling in Test matches. During the Ashes last year, Anderson’s form had been erratic, collecting just five wickets in four matches.

Anderson took ten wickets in four matches during England’s 4-1 defeat to India on their current trip. Anderson’s future as a player for his county team Lancashire is uncertain.
