Rohit to Dravid: ‘An absolute privilege to call you my confidant, coach and friend’

In a heartfelt letter, Rohit Sharma thanked departing India head coach Rahul Dravid for his humility and ability to put players at ease.

“Hi Rahul, Here’s my attempt at expressing my views about this, since I have been struggling to find the correct words. Rohit posted this on Instagram.

“Since my childhood days I have looked up to you just like billions of others but I was lucky enough to get to work with you this closely. You are an absolute stalwart of this game but you left all of your accolades and achievements at the door and walked in as our coach and came on a level where we all felt comfortable enough to say just about anything to you. That is your gift, your humility and your love for this game even after all this time. I have learnt so much from you and every memory will be cherished.”

Under Dravid’s leadership, Rohit made his debut on the international front in an ODI against Ireland. Together, as captain and coach, they won the T20 World Cup in 2024, putting an end to India’s ICC title drought. After losing to Australia in the final of the ODI World Cup at home last year, they were victorious in this competition and went undefeated overall. Dravid’s nearly three-year tenure as India’s head coach came to an end with the competition in the West Indies and the USA.

“My wife refers to you as my work wife and I’m lucky to get to call you that too,” wrote Rohit. This was the only item you were lacking in your toolbox, so I’m thrilled we were able to complete it together. It has truly been an honour to be able to call you my friend, coach, and confidant, Rahul bhai.”

during India’s victory in Bridgetown, Dravid recalled that Rohit had called him during the World Cup final the previous year, after his initial two-year contract had ended, requesting that he stay on till the T20 World Cup in 2024. Soon, a successor to David is anticipated to be announced.
