The new ICC chief, Jay Shah, will begin his term today.

Jay Shah, the former secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), began his term as the new head of the International Cricket Council (ICC) on Sunday. According to a statement from the International Cricket Council (ICC), Jay Shah’s term as ICC Chair officially began today, December 1.

Shah listed his goals during his stint as ICC Chair, which included significantly boosting the development of the women’s game and taking advantage of the sport’s inclusion in the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.

“I am honoured to take on the role of ICC Chair and grateful for the support and trust of the ICC Directors and Member Boards. This is an exciting time for the sport as we prepare for the LA28 Olympic Games and work to make cricket more inclusive and engaging for fans worldwide,” Shah was quoted by ICC as saying.

“We are at a critical juncture with the coexistence of multiple formats and the need to accelerate the growth of the women’s game. Cricket holds immense potential globally, and I look forward to working closely with the ICC team and Member countries to seize these opportunities and take the sport to new heights,” he added.

Shah began his career with the Gujarat Cricket Association (GCA) in 2009 and has a wealth of experience in cricket administration. He managed the construction of Ahmedabad’s largest cricket stadium during his tenure.
Shah became the youngest honorary secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) when he joined in 2019.
Shah will now take over as ICC Chair in place of Greg Barclay. Barclay took over the position in November 2020, and Shah recognised his involvement in the accomplishments of ICC throughout the past four years.

“I would also like to thank Greg Barclay for his leadership in the role for the past four years and the milestones achieved during that period. I look forward to working closely with the ICC team and the Member countries to expand the game’s reach and evolution on the global stage,” he said.

The next Chairman of the ICC, Jay Shah, was elected without opposition in August 2024. According to an ICC media release, Shah was the only candidate for the presidency after Greg Barclay declined to run for a third term. (ANI)
