Dulip Samaraweera, the head coach of the Victoria women’s team, resigned after barely two weeks in the position because the state’s laws prevented him from making the appointment he desired to his staff.
After serving as the acting head coach since Jarrad Loughman resigned from the position in November of last year, Samaraweera, who played seven Test matches and five One-Day Internationals for Sri Lanka between 1993 and 1994, was hired on a two-year contract earlier in May.
“During the recruitment process Dulip had expressed a desire to make a specific coaching appointment in his support team,” Cricket Victoria CEO Nick Cummins said.
“That appointment was unable to be facilitated due to internal policies we have in place. Following further conversations, Dulip decided he would prefer not to remain in the role.”
Andrew Christie, the WBBL assistant coach for the Melbourne Renegades, who participated in the original hiring process, will take Samaraweera’s post. Christie became the program’s head of female emerging players when she joined Cricket Victoria in 2021.
