Yesterday, Royal Challengers Bangalore made history by defeating the reigning champion Chennai Super Kings by a margin of 27 runs, securing a spot in the playoffs. Notably, the team was near the bottom of the point standings at the beginning of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024, but with consistent victories in the final few games, RCB was able to get to the postseason.
An update on yesterday’s M Chinnaswamy Stadium match: CSK chose to bowl first after winning the toss. RCB lost five wickets in 20 overs while batting first, scoring 218 runs. Of them, Rajat Patidar scored 41 runs, Virat Kohli scored 47, and Faf du Plessis scored 54. Shradul Thakur grabbed two wickets for CSK, while Mitchell Santner and Tushar Deshpande each claimed one wicket.
CSK lost seven wickets in their attempt to hit 191 runs, falling short of the 219-run goal. Ajinkya Rahane scored 33 runs, Ravindra Jadeja scored 42 runs (not out), and Rachin Ravindra scored 61 runs. Yash Dayal grabbed two wickets for the RCB, while Glenn Maxewell and Cameron Green each claimed one wicket.
Notably, for both CSK and RCB, it was a “do or die” match based on the points table and playoff situation. Fortunately, RCB overcame the reigning champions by 27 runs, which was all they needed to upset CSK by 18 runs in order to advance. CSK supporters, on the other hand, are not pleased with the game because rumours have it that MS Dhoni may retire following the tournament, making this year’s IPL his final one. Every supporter of MSD and CSK wanted to see him compete in the tournament’s championship game.
Regarding the points table, the Rajasthan Royals, Sunrisers Hyderabad, Royal Challengers Bangalore, and Kolkata Knight Riders are now ranked highest.
